Experiencing the Exeter Blitz
Year 5 have been studying the lives of children during World War 2. As part of our studies we visited the Connections Center, where there is an interactive air raid shelter!
There is a front room that looks exactly the same as it would of
done during the war - it has a
home-made Monopoly set and
a home-made tank as toys
were scare and expensive
during the war.

We examined a variety of different gas-masks. We didn't put them on because some of them still contain asbestos. People did not know how dangerous asbestos was during the war years.
This mask was for an adult.
This type of mask was designed for children. Sometimes they had 'Mickey Mouse' ears added to them to make them more 'fun' for the children wearing them.
This one was for a
baby - air had to be constantly pumped into it, all the way
through an air raid! (It's not a
real baby in there - it's a doll
that we kept dropping-oops!)
