Exeter Synagogue

Redhills pupils visited Exeter Synagogue, the 2nd oldest in the UK.
Above - the children take part in a mock-wedding ceremony. The Upper Gallery, visable in the top left hand corner is traditionally where female members of the synagogue worshipped. Male members occupy seats on the ground floor.
This menora is a traditional Jewish emblem. It has 9 lights and is associated with the festival of chanaka. (Usually they have 7 lights, representing that used in the original Temple of Jerusalem).
Mr Semple blows a horn! This rams horn is blown only during very special festivals.(And when we visited!)
This magnificent structure contains the 'Torah' - the Jewish Holy Book. It must not be touched when read, so a special pointing device( a 'yad') is used.
These examples of the Torah come from all over the world. One is decorated with a beautiful 'Tas' or breastplate, that was designed and made by an artist in Israel.
This is the 'Perpetual Light' that is on permenantly as a reminder of the original light that burnt in the Temple of Jerusalem.
